There are a range of ways to get involved in sustainability while studying at Queen Mary.
Set up by the Students' Union and the Sustainability Team, this is a network for students who want to stay up to date with sustainability initiatives, events, and conversations. Students can use this space to connect with others and start new projects with support from the Sustainability Coordinator. This is a student-focused area of the Sustainability Climate Action Network (SCAN). To join, please email sustainability@qmul.ac.uk.
The Sustainability Team sends out a monthly Sustainability Newsletter aimed towards students. It usually includes sustainability news, events (QM and local), and tips. Subscribe to the Sustainability Newsletter.
Here are the past Sustainability Newsletters:
March 2024 Sustainability Newsletter - Waste and Recycling
February 2024 Sustainability Newsletter - Love Your Planet
January 2024 Sustainability Newsletter - Sustainable New Year
Students can talk to the Sustainability Board and attend the quarterly meetings to discuss how sustainability should be embedded in Students’ Union Activities. The Sustainability Board is made up of students elected to be part-time Student Council Officers and Representatives. Find out about the Sustainability Board members, elections in March, meeting dates, and previous successes here.
The Students' Union hold annual ceremonies for the Society Awards and the Volunteering Awards. Within the Society Awards is a the Sustainability Impact Award which is given to the student group who has made a positive impact on the world around them through activities seeking to address global challenges such as environmental sustainability or climate change. Within the Volunteering Awards there is the Sustainability Volunteer of the Year which is given to a student who has shown dedication to sustainability through their volunteering efforts.
The following student societies are a great way to join in with sustainability-related events and meet like-minded people.
QMSU Volunteering is an easy way to get involved with volunteering and gain recognition via the Volunteering Awards. Getting involved with these opportunities can help you develop your skillset and CV, while helping out with your community. The volunteering opportunities range from local Tower Hamlets to further London boroughs, and from one-off to recurring. Some sustainability opportunities include Canal Clean-Ups, Tree Planting, Litter Picks, charity shop positions, the Reuse Fair, and Biodiversity Sessions in the Mile End allotments. Go to the webpage, sign in with your student login, make a volunteering profile, then go to ‘View Opportunities’ to get started.
